Abstract

From the American classic to the movie directed by Baz Luhrmann, The Great Gatsby has been a piece of literature and a film that has been loved by many generations for many years. Although the green light is the symbolic piece of hope that Jay Gatsby reaches out to, and when it’s just out of reach- all seems lost no matter how many times he tries to grasp it. The movie, starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Tobey Maguire won countless awards including Best Production Design. This begged the question, “What if the green light isn’t the most important light that we see in the film?” From the lighting aspects in the darker scenes to the camera angles picking up more color than most cinematic scenes will ever include: is the green light the only light that needs to be focused on for The Great Gatsby?
