Abstract
In this podcast, Michaela Murphy, Katherine Hare, Haley Stout, and Luis Bravo, all students of Dr. Hüsing’s Senior Seminar ENGL 4397 class, discuss human relationships with technology and specifically artificial intelligence as it is portrayed in different forms of media. The podcast is formatted as members of the Media Club meeting to discuss their different topics, resulting in a fun, engaging, and collaborative conversation. Katherine starts by discussing Black Mirror’s episode “Be Right Back” and how humans have certain needs and aspects that, no matter how advanced technology can be, can never replace, such as love, connection, and relationships. Luis next discusses the realm of video games and specifically Quantic Dream’s game Detroit: Become Human, where humans interact with androids, highlighting society’s perception of them. Next, Haley explores the popular film franchise Star Wars and the character of C-3PO and some of the moral or ethical questions that arise when humans interact with technology, and how certain forms of media, such as the films, explore these topics. Lastly, Michaela discusses a novelette by Ai Jiang called I am AI, and examines how cyborgs, or humans with technological parts, view themselves and their humanity in terms of being perfected or altered to become the best versions of themselves. Please enjoy the discussions and conversations about different forms of media and the ways in which they explore the connection between humans and technology!
