Abstract

My infographic, “Adaptation of Benedict Bridgerton,” discusses a modern influence in regency romance television through Netflix’s Bridgerton (2020) due to resurgence of feminism in popular culture. This work critically evaluates the changes made to Benedict Bridgeton’s character in remediation from Julia Quinn’s original book series (2000-2006) and investigates why modern audiences connect more with his on-screen counterpart. Season 4 sanitizes blackmail and coercion from Quinn’s An Offer from A Gentleman (2001), offering differing examples of masculinity, e.g., domineering vs. egalitarian. Power dynamics, behavioral traits, and the benefits of multimodal communication are examined individually for rhetorical effect, encouraging or degrading the overall appeal of Benedict as a Regency male lead.
