Beyond Informing: The Visual Language and Historical Impact of Night and Fog

Class: ENGL 3308: Writing Textual Analysis with Dr. Hüsing (Spring 2026)

Abstract

My process for writing Night and Fog started by deciding my topic. I knew that I wanted to write about something that was important to me, and Night and Fog was just that. I started by watching the documentary and finding key moments and topics I knew I would want to talk about in the paper. The narration stood out to me the most, as it was the main source of information in the documentary. Once finding these topics, I immediately delved into researching the process of creating the documentary and those who were part of it. When researching, I mainly focused on decisions regarding the creative process for the documentary as well as public opinions. I wanted to find out what precautions they took due to its release being only ten years after the end of the war. My main goal for this paper was to inform others about this documentary and its purpose. I believe it was a turning point for how people perceive Auschwitz and the conditions of the prisoners as a whole. Once I had finally started writing, it seemed as if no amount of words could possibly do the documentary justice. This piece of media is something I will carry with me forever, and I hope my paper can bring more light to it.
