Class Divisions and Social Injustice in Ready Player One

Class: ENGL 5369: Exploring AI: Storytelling, Ethics, and Multimodal Science Fiction with Dr. Hüsing (Spring 2025)

Abstract

In this infographic I explore the representation of social injustice and class divisions in the movie adaptation of Ready Player One. The IOI (Innovative Online Industries) Corporation, within Ready Player One is led by a power and money hungry, Nolan Sorrento. He had originally worked with the creator of The OASIS, James Halliday. In the movie, The OASIS is a VR world that allows humans to escape the impoverished Columbus, Ohio. Upon the death of James Halliday, he left Easter eggs within The OASIS and the finder of the Easter eggs would gain full control of The OASIS. Nolan Sorrento and his army of IOI workers find themselves up against a rag tag group of teens. With limited resources and led by Wade Watts (ParZival) the teens outsmart Sorrento and the IOI to win the contest set by Halliday. The infographic was created in the interest of continuing conversations of the implications of a technologically advanced society on human behavior. That said, instead of helping society in a time of need the big corporation uses their power and money to further suppress and impoverished society. This infographic highlights specific instances of social injustice and class divisions in a society with advanced VR present.
